From early in our childhood, we learn the importance of not giving up. Whether it's learning to ride our bike or learning to tie our shoes, we are told to "keep trying." The Little Engine's refrain is engraved upon us: "I think I can; I think I can; I think I can." Yet, how many times do we feel like giving up? How do we keep trying when injustice overwhelms peace and fighting prevails over forgiveness? This week, we turn to the story of the persistent widow in Luke's gospel for a word of encouragement. The widow gives us an example to follow but along the way, we make a discovery about the perseverance of God.
