Most of us have sat in a hospital waiting room while a surgery ran longer than anyone said it would. Nobody there can hurry the news along. What helps is the person who pulls a chair over and stays. This Sunday we'll hear Moses pray from a long wait of his own. The people have just built a golden calf, a god they could see, because the waiting had gone on too long. Moses asks God to show him the way forward. God gives him something better: "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus turns over a coin and asks whose image is on it. The coin belongs to the emperor. We belong to God.
The sermon is 'The Promise of Company.' It asks how a church between chapters keeps walking when it can't yet see the road. We'll begin with "Holy, Holy, Holy" and close with "How Firm a Foundation," whose promise is the whole morning in five words: "Fear not, I am with thee."
