Worship

From this Sunday's guest preacher, Adam McAllister: "When reading over the Scripture passage for this week, two things stuck out to me: the first of which is the idea of oneness, but the other is that Jesus specifically references the name of God as the name, not only the name that both God and Jesus share, but also the name that God has given to Christ. There is so much power in a name. I am not big on Contemporary Christian music these days, but when I was younger, I discovered a singer-songwriter by the name of Nichole Nordeman. As a teenager, I had difficulty being able to vocalize my feelings about things. I had found that Nichole Nordeman was able to somehow put words to emotions that I was feeling in her music. One particular song, that still stays with me today from her album, Woven and Spun, is the song entitled "I Am." In the song, she speaks to different parts of her life and how the names of God changed based on the circumstances in her life. As a child, she references God as "Elbow Healer and Superhero." As a teenager... "Heartache Healer and Secret Keeper." As a young mother, "Shepherd, Savior, Pasture Maker" and then at the end of her life, she sings all the traditional ways in which we name God/Christ. Names such as: Creator, Maker, Life Sustainer, Comforter, Healer, Redeemer, Beginning and the End, and finally I Am. I must admit, even as an adult it sometimes can be easier to see God as an elbow healer. I wonder what it would be like for us, as adults to reframe our ideas of God through names of God with childlike imagination. Perhaps such ideas of God would reset a new framework around our own theology and thus how we carry out our faith in the world."
